Eagle Lake
This short but rewarding trail begins at the iconic Eagle Falls and climbs steadily into the heart of Desolation Wilderness. Granite staircases, creek crossings, and shaded forest sections lead you to the crystal-clear alpine water of Eagle Lake. The shoreline offers several spots to relax, dip your feet, or take in dramatic views of the surrounding peaks.

Castle Rock
This trail winds through rolling forest before opening onto the massive volcanic towers of Castle Rock. A short, easy scramble takes you to viewpoints overlooking all of South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra ridgelines. It’s a fantastic sunrise or sunset option thanks to the wide, open vantage points near the top.

Fallen Leaf Lake
This gentle lakeside trail loops through quiet forest, open shoreline, and small meadows. Fallen Leaf Lake is known for its stunning mirror-like reflections, especially in the morning and evening. It’s a peaceful walk perfect for beginners, families, or anyone looking for a relaxing escape without major elevation gain.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park
Starting right behind Heavenly Village, this trail climbs quickly into rugged high-desert terrain with sweeping views of Lake Tahoe. The route connects to a web of trails across both California and Nevada, making it perfect for hikers or mountain bikers wanting customizable mileage. Expect rocky switchbacks, exposed hillside traverses, and incredible views as you gain elevation.

Cave Rock
This quick out-and-back leads to a panoramic viewpoint perched above Lake Tahoe’s deep blue water. The trail is easy and accessible, with a short climb at the end that rewards you with 180° lake views. Cave Rock itself is a culturally significant landmark, and the viewpoint is one of the best bang-for-your-buck hikes in the basin.

Horsetail Falls
This adventurous trail follows Pyramid Creek over polished granite slabs and cascading pools all the way to the base of a massive 500-foot waterfall. The second half of the hike involves picking your way across open granite, following cairns, and scrambling up steep sections. It’s one of the most impressive waterfall hikes near Tahoe and offers endless viewpoints as you climb higher.
